A Concert of Spanish Stories
Internationally-acclaimed cellist Li-Wei Qin, one of the most sought-after artists of his generation, has earned numerous international prizes and performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras. In this program, he takes on the formidable role of soloist and protagonist in Richard Strauss’s brilliant tone poem Don Quixote inspired by the classic Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes. Carl St.Clair opens the concert with the overture to Mozart’s dramatic opera Don Giovanni, a retelling of the legendary Spanish tale of Don Juan. Rounding out the program is Rimsky-Korsakov’s dazzling orchestral showpiece, Capriccio espagnole, inspired by the vibrant rhythms and colors of Spanish folk music.
