Enter the powdered-wig drawing room of the mid-eighteenth century with the elegant Rococo Variations. Youthful Russian cello-powerhouse Alexy Stadler brings Tchaikovsky’s vision of this ornamental and florid time period to life. Brazilian Maestro Ligia Amadio conducts Strauss’ philosophical masterpiece Also Sprach Zarathustra which entered the imagination of the world as its opening inspired one of the most famous extra-terrestrial encounters on film in Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Synopsis:
Stop to think for a moment how many literary characters inhabit classical music. The arts are full of examples when two or more disciplines cross to create a fresh and distinctive way to look at the world. Tristan, Isolda and Zarathustra are three colorful literary characters that are also part of the musical universe.

The doomed romantic figures of Tristan and Isolda existed for centuries in the stories of England and France before Richard Wagner immortalized their story in musically adventurous opera.

Brazilian Maestra Ligia Amadio joins the Thailand Phil to conduct Strauss’ philosophical masterpiece Also Sprach Zarathustra which entered the imagination of the world as its opening inspired one of the most famous extra-terrestrial encounters on film in Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Zarathustra, or Zoroaster, serves as the founder of the poetic religion of Zoroastrianism, one of the world’s oldest religions.
