Thailand International Composition Festival 2019
The classics of today were once the new music of yesterday. The Thailand International Composition Festival, founded in 2005 by the award-winning Thai composer Narong Prangcharoen, encourages and celebrates the creation of new music. This fifteenth iteration of TICF will feature Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Melinda Wagner, UCSD Professor of composition Chinary Ung, and Deqing Wen, Professor of Composition at Shanghai Conservatory of Music and Artistic Director of Shanghai New Music Festival. Don’t miss this chance to hear the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra perform some of the new music of today that will become the classics of tomorrow.

Synopsis:
Keep up with the new as the Thailand Phil presents an adventurous program of works by living composers in its annual Thailand International Composition Festival concert.
Led by Maestro Kyle Wiley Pickett this year’s program is heavy on new music by Asian composers as we hear orchestral works by Narong Prangcharoen, Deqing Wen, Xiaogang YE and Chinary Ung. Pulitzer Prize winner Melidna Wagner’s “Proceed, Moon” ends the evening.
Commissioned by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and premiered by them in 2017, this 18-minute contemporary wonder is filled with incisive, visceral, lyrical, and powerful musical ideas. Wagner’s music brims with unexpected orchestral color that appears without warning and melts back with enigmatic shyness. Her music always tries to tell a story.
Join the music director of the Topeka Symphony and celebrate the new in this one evening special event.
