Synopsis:

One of America’s most innovative conductors, Carl St. Clair, leads the Thailand Phil in two repertory standards and shines a spotlight on Illuminating Journey, Narong Prangcharoen’s 2014 composition.

Narong Prangcharoen’s Illuminating Journey is a reflection on the close and lengthy relationship between the composer and Maestro St.Clair. Written during Dr. Narong’s tenure as composer-in-residence for the Pacific Symphony, the piece uses the conductor’s name as inspiration for the melodic material.

Following this most personal of pieces, Latvian pianist Dina Yoffe brings her gentle and warm sound to Beethoven’s serene and poetic Piano Concerto No. 4. It’s an unusual piece – beginning not with an orchestral introduction but through the placid chords of the soloist.

The program is not all tender: we reignite the flames in Shostakovich’s tenth and most rousing symphony. Stuck in the restrictive atmosphere of Stalinism, Shostakovich’s music is a musical document of resistance to his political difficulties by musical means.
