Actors often say that it is more fun to play a villain than a hero. Join the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra to hear if that is true in music as well. From Mozart’s rake, Don Giovanni, to the star-crossed lovers Francesca and Paolo in Tchaikovsky’s Francesca da Rimini to Prateep Suphanrojn’s marvelous new setting of the Ramayana, we explore the “dark side” of classical music. The devilish virtuosity of Wieniawski’s first violin concerto in the hands
of Taiwanese prodigy Yu-Chia Chiu adds to the fun.

Actors often say that it’s more fun to play a villain than a hero. Join the Thailand Phil to hear if that is true in music too. From Mozart’s rake Don Giovanni to the star-crossed lovers Francesca and Paolo in Tchaikovsky’s Francesca da Rimini to Prateep Supharojn’s marvelous new setting of the Ramayana we explore the “dark side” of classical music.
The concerto selection fits into the theme too: the devilish virtuosity of Wieniawski’s first violin concerto is as difficult as any piece for the violin. It requires from performers musical intelligence and athletic stamina. Taiwanese violin prodigy Yu-Chia Chiu brings both to this rarely heard Romantic masterpiece.
Gundi Emilsson’s passionate conducting style fits right into the dramatic and mysterious overture from Mozart’s Don Giovanni. Alternating between moody and tunefully hopeful, the Don Giovanni overture has resonated in concert halls since its 1787 premiere in Prague. Similar subject matter is explored in Tchaikovsky’s Francesca da Rimini, a symphonic poem inspired by the doomed love story in Dante’s Divine Comedy.
