Elgar’s Italian Journey

The four movements of Brahms’s Second Symphony are full of warmth, brimming with optimism, and overflowing with lush, joyful melodies. Equally boisterous is In the South, Elgar’s tonal tribute to the sundrenched beauty of Italy’s coastal towns. The velvety sound of the marimba in the sensitive hands of one of its experts, Johannes Fischer, completes this tender program with Paul Creston’s brief and upbeat Concertino for Marimba.

Synopsis:

Elgar’s tonal tribute to the sun-drenched beauty of Italy’s coastal towns is the core material for this mostly late Romantic program. In the South is the Englishman’s masterpiece devoted to a real world that is, at the same time, a product of his fertile and special imagination.

The four movements of Brahms’s Second Symphony are full of warmth, brimming with optimism and overflowing with lush, joyful melodies. Long phrases permeate this extraordinary evergreen, written in the summer on 1877, and stacked with unforgettable tunes.

The velvety sound of the marimba in the sensitive hands of one of its experts, Johannes Fischer, completes this tender program with Paul Creston’s brief and upbeat Concerto for Marimba. Fischer has been called the “percussion magician” by the Berliner Morgenpost and his precision and range of colors are sure to impress and astonish.

A bright new light in the conducting word, Maestro Dionysis Grammenos, shows the way for this mix of the familiar and rare.
