Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra

Written in 1959 as musical testament left by Francis Poulenc (1899 – 1913), the Gloria is a spectacular and grandiose choral work, with bright harmonic colorations and syncopated rhythm. This sacred work for soprano solo, large orchestra and chorus is different from Poulenc’s other sacred compositions: “My Stabat Mater is an a cappella work, my Gloria is a choral symphony”.

Francis Poulenc is clearly dealing playfully with the religious meaning of the Gloria and makes fun of eleven centuries of religious and sacred music, more precisely the traditional Gregorian chant. However, in its simplicity and through its meditative moments, the work remains deeply religious and intense.

Namaskar

for Orchestra

In Sanskrit, “Namaskar” can be translated as “Salutation”. In the ritual ceremony, the Namaskar is used as a first step to pray for god before one do anything or any ceremony.  The benefit of Namaskar is to purify human spirit and soul. Traditional Namaskar ritual usually starts with the sound of Sankha, Horn and Drum which represented by Brass and Percussion sound in the piece. In this piece, there are some contrast musical styles which are slow music in slow tempo and fast music in slow tempo. It is to explore the use of time in music. In Asian Philosophy, the use of time can be display by long slow folding line which is shown in this piece by the use of slow tempo with different type of energy.

I hope we Namaskar to God to protect us and most importantly to protect this Earth so we can live happily ever after.

สำหรับวงออเครสตร้า

ในภาษาสันสกฤต นมัสการ หมายถึงการแสดงความเคารพ ในพิธีการต่างๆ นมัสการได้ถูกใช้ในการเริ่มต้นของพิธีการเหล่านั้นเพื่อแสดงความเครพต่อสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธ์และเทพพยาดา เพื่อให้ท่านทั้งหลายได้ลงมาอวยพรให้งานดังกล่าวประสบความสำเร็จ นอกจากนั้นยังมีความเชื่อว่านมัสการยังช่วยชำระล้างจิตใจให้บริสุทธิ์ก่อนเข้าพิธีต่างๆอีกด้วย ดนตรีที่ใช้ประกอบพิธีนมัสการมักจะเริ่มต้นด้วยแตรสังข์และกลองมโหระทึกซึ่งได้ใช้เครื่องเป่าทองเหลืองและกลองในการสร้างเสียงดังกล่าวด้วยวงออเครสตร้า ในเพลงนี้ได้มีการใช้วิธีการเปลี่ยนจังหวะโดยบางครั้งใช้เพลงเร็วในจังหวะที่ช้า หรือบางครั้งเพลงช้าในจังหวะที่เร็ว เพื่อเป็นการค้นหาการใช้องค์ประกอบของเวลาในบทเพลง ซึ่งมีความเชื่อว่าบทเพลงแบบตะวันออกใช้เวลาแตกต่างกันในการสร้างพลังงานให้กับบทเพลง ซึ่งการทำแบบนี้จะทำให้ได้พลังงานในการขับเคลื่อนเพลงที่แตกต่างกันไป เพลงนี้จะแสดงความเคารพให้สิ่งศักดิ์สิทธ์ทั้งหลายเพื่อช่วยคุ้มครองโลกให้อยู่ต่อไปอีกยาวนาน พ้นจากภัยต่างๆ ที่เกิดขึ้นมากในปัจจุบัน

Narong Prangcharoen

The music of Thai composer NARONG PRANGCHAROEN has been called “absolutely captivating” (Chicago Sun Times).  Prangcharoen has established an international reputation and is recognized as one of Thailand’s leading composers.  He has received many international prizes, including the Alexander Zemlinsky International Composition Competition Prize, the 18th ACL Yoshiro IRINO Memorial Composition Award, the Pacific Symphony’s American Composers Competition Prize, the Toru Takemitsu Composition Award, the Music Teacher National Association(USA), the Annapolis Charter 300 International Composers Competition Prize, and Minnesota Orchestra Composer Institute.  In 2007, the Thai government named Prangcharoen a Contemporary National Artist and awarded him the Silapathorn Award, one of Thailand’s most prestigious honors.

Prangcharoen’s music has been performed in Asia, America, Australia, and Europe by many renowned ensembles such as the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Pacific Symphony, the Grant Park Orchestra, the Nagoya Philharmonic, the Melbourne Symphony, the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic, The Oregon Symphony Orchestra, The Minnesota Orchestra, and the German National Theater Orchestra, under many well-known conductors, such Carl St. Clair, Carlos Kalmer, Jose-Luis Novo, Osmo Vaska, and Mikhail Pletnev.  His music has also been presented by, among others, Ensemble TIMF, The New York New Music Ensemble, the Imani Winds, saxophonist John Sampen and pianist Bennett Lerner.

Prangcharoen’s music has been performed at many important music festivals, such as the Grant Park Music Festival, the Asia: the 21st Century Orchestra Project, the MoMA Music Festival, Maverick Concerts: “Music in the Wood”, Beijing Modern Music Festival, the Lincoln Center, and the Library of Congress.

Prangcharoen received his DMA from University of Missouri-Kansas City where he study with his primary teacher Chen Yi. In addition to working as a freelance composer, he is currently teaching at the Community Music and Dance Academy of the Conservatory of Music, University of Missouri in Kansas City.  Prangcharoen is the founder of the Thailand International Composition Festival in Thailand, now in its seventh year.

ณรงค์ ปรางค์เจริญ

นัก ประพันธ์ เพลงชาวไทย ณรงค์ ปรางค์เจริญ ได้รับการ กล่าวขานใน Los Angeles Times ว่าเป็น “นักประพันธ์เพลงที่มีพรสวรรค์ในการสร้างสีสัน สำหรับวงออเคสตร้า” และบทเพลงของเขายังได้รับการกล่าวขานจากหนังสือพิมพ์ Chicago Sun Times ว่า “มีเสน่ห์อย่างสมบูรณ์ยิ่ง”

ณรงค์ ได้รับรางวัลการประพันธ์เพลงในระดับนานาชาติหลายรางวัลอาทิเช่น รางวัล Alexander Zemlinsky International Composition Competition Prize, รางวัล ACL Yoshiro Irino Memorial Composition Award, รางวัล Pacific Symphony’s American Composer Competition Prize, รางวัล Toru Takemitsu Composition Award, Music Teacher National Association ที่สหรัฐอเมริกา รางวัลชนะเลิศจาก the Annapolis Charter 300 International Composers Competition Prize และ Minnesota Orchestra Composer Institute ณรงค์ ได้รับรางวัลศิลปาธร จากกระทรวงวัฒนธรรมในปี 2550 ซึ่งเป็นรางวัลที่ทรงเกียรติรางวัลหนึ่งของประเทศไทย

ผลงานของ ณรงค์ มักได้รับแรงบันดาลใจจากเรื่องราวต่างๆจากประเทศไทย เช่นผลงานสำหรับออเคสตร้า “ศรัทธา” สำหรับวงเครื่องสาย เปียโน และ เพอร์คัสชัน ซึ่งแต่งขึ้นเพื่อเป็นที่ระลึกแก่ผู้ประสบภัยสึนามิ เมื่อเดือนธันวาคม 2547 ได้รับเกียรตินำไปบรรเลงโดยวง Pacific Symphony ที่ Orange County, รัฐแคลิฟอร์เนีย ในปี 2548 เพื่อไว้อาลัยในการครบรอบหนึ่งปีแด่ผู้ประสบภัยสึนามิ ซึ่งได้รับการต้อนรับอย่างอบอุ่นจากผู้ฟัง เพลง “ศรัทธา” ได้ถูกนำไปบรรเลงอีกครั้งในปี 2550 โดยวง Melbourne Symphony ประเทศออสเตรเลีย และ วง German National Theater Symphony Orchestra ประเทศเยรมันนี ในปี 2551

ณรงค์เป็นนักประพันธ์เพลงชาวไทยคนแรกที่ได้รับเกียรติเพื่อนำบทเพลง ไปแสดงในงาน “Grant Park Music Festival” ที่เมือง ชิคาโก (Chicago) ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา โดยวง Grant Park Orchestra ได้บรรเลงผลงานที่ชื่อ Phenomenon สำหรับวงออเคสตร้า นอกจากนั้นผลงานชิ้นนี้ ยังได้ถูกนำไปบรรเลงโดยวงออเคสตร้าอื่นๆอีกมากมาย รวมไปถึง วง Oregon Symphony Orchestra ที่นำบทเพลงนี้ไปแสดงเปิด season ในปี 2553 อีกด้วย วง Imani Winds ได้จัดทัวร์คอนเสิร์ตบทเพลงสำหรับเครื่องลมไม้ (Woodwind Quintet) ของณรงค์ มากกว่า 25 แห่งในสหรัฐอเมริกาและเม็กซิโก

บทเพลงของณรงค์ ได้รับการนำไปบรรเลงในเทศการดนตรีที่สำคัญหลายๆแห่ง อาทิเช่น MoMA Music Festival (Museum of Modern Art, New York City), Maverick Concerts “Music in the Wood”, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (Lincoln Center, New York City), Carnegie Hall, (New York City), Beijing Modern Music Festival, Kuala Lumpur Contemporary Music Festival, Smithsonian Museum และที่ Library of Congress (Washington DC) อีกด้วย ณรงค์ เป็นผู้ก่อตั้งเทศกาลประพันธ์เพลง “Thailand International Composition Festival” เพื่อพัฒนาวงการ การประพันธ์เพลงในเมืองไทย ซึ่งขณะนี้จัดขึ้นเป็นปีที่เจ็ดแล้ว

ปัจจุบันนอกจากจะเป็นนักประพันธ์เพลงอาชีพแล้ว ณรงค์ เคยได้รับเชิญให้เป็นอาจารย์สอนที่มหาวิทยาลัย แห่งรัฐอิลลินอยล์ (Illinois State University) ในปี 2548 และเคยเป็นอาจารย์ ประจำภาควิชาดุริยางค์สากล มหาวิทยาลัยศรีนครินทรวิโรฒ ขณะนี้ณรงค์เป็นอาจารย์สอนที่ Community Music and Dance Academy ที่ Conservatory of Music มหาวิทยาลัย แห่งรัฐมิสซูรี-แคนซัสซิตี้ (University of Missouri-Kansas City) ณรงค์ได้ออกอัลบั้มเดี่ยวกับบริษัทอัลบานี เร็คคอร์ด ที่ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา (Albany Records, USA) และได้เป็นตัวแทนของนักประพันธ์เพลงของปี 2008 ที่ได้รับการบันทีกเสียงคู่กับบทเพลงจากนักประพันธ์เพลงชั้นนำในอดีต เช่น Symphony No. 5 โดย Ludwig Van Beethoven (1808) Rapsodie Espagnole โดย Maurice Ravel (1908) ปัจจุบันณรงค์ใช้เวลาส่วนใหญ่พำนักอยู่ที่ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา และใช้เวลาส่วนหนึ่งพำนักในประเทศไทย
