Many critics refer to the era of composers like Korngold, Newman and others of the 1930s through the 1950s as a sort of “Golden Age” of excellent film music. Many of these composers were refugees from Germany during and after the Second World War. More recent composers such as Morricone, Williams and Webber have recreated that tradition in a number of film scores of rich orchestration and high quality.

Inspired by the poem L´Après-midi d´un faune by Stephane Mallarmé, the prelude is one of Debussy’s most famous works and is very free as to tonality and harmonic function. The Prélude is followed by another piece of Debussy: La Mer is a masterpiece of suggestion and subtlety in its rich depiction of the ocean. Joining together with the TPO is our own Agrita Lakute, presenting the Flute concerto by Ibert, written in 1934.
