Born in Prague to a family of Jewish origin, Jaromir Weinberger later emigrated to the United States and eventually became a US citizen. The Polka and Fugue is often heard in a concert version nowadays, compare to the original work, the opera Schwanda the Bagpiper, which received a worldwide success after its premiere in 1927. Based upon themes from his opera Mathis der Maler, about the painter Matthias Grunewald, the Symphony is considered the most famous orchestral work of German composer Paul Hindemith.
